As the new year approaches, 9th-11th graders should start planning how to make the most of their upcoming summer. By choosing activities that align with their interests and long-term goals, they can significantly enhance their future college applications. Universities value extracurricular involvement that demonstrates depth and a genuine passion—more than quantity of activities.

Students should focus on opportunities that reflect their genuine interests and provide meaningful experiences, which can also serve as compelling material for application essays. Options include academic programs, research projects, cultural immersion through international travel, community service, internships, or even campus visits.

In a recent interview, Columbia University's admissions team was asked whether they would prefer a student who attended a prestigious summer program at its school or one who pursued a unique endeavor, like a cheese-making course at the University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. Their answer? The latter—if it reflected a strong and authentic interest. By thoughtfully selecting experiences, students can make their summer both fulfilling and impactful. Four factors to consider when selecting a summer activity:

University Insights: Attending a summer program at a highly competitive university doesn’t guarantee admission but offers a unique opportunity to experience campus life firsthand. Students can immerse themselves in the university’s culture, explore academic offerings, and interact with peers who share similar interests. These programs help students assess whether the university aligns with their goals while enhancing their college applications by demonstrating academic curiosity and initiative.

Work Experience or Internships: Securing formal employment might be challenging in some countries, but students can leverage family or high school connections to gain valuable work experience through internships or jobs. Ideally, the role should align with the student’s academic or career interests, but no job is insignificant. Whether working in customer service, washing dishes, babysitting, or doing yard work, such experiences reflect a strong work ethic and effective time management. Colleges value these experiences as indicators of reliability, initiative, and readiness for higher education.

Alignment with Student's Goals: Does the potential summer experience align with the student’s aspirations? For instance, a program that combines adventure travel and community service may not be the best fit for a student deeply focused on scientific research or academic pursuits.

Not All Programs are Created Equal: Be aware that some summer programs hosted on university campuses are not directly affiliated with the institution. Also, select a program that prioritizes safety—ensure it has adequate supervision, emergency protocols, and access to health resources. A well-organized program with clear objectives and support structures is essential for a productive and enriching experience.
