Graduate School 101

Applying to graduate school – immediately after obtaining an undergraduate degree or after working for a few years – requires careful planning and strategic action. Applicants are expected to articulate their academic and research interests and demonstrate how their past experiences have prepared them for advanced study and an eventual career in the field.

Admission to graduate programs tends to be more competitive, with fewer available spots compared to undergraduate programs. Therefore, applicants must demonstrate not only academic excellence but also a clear passion for their chosen field and a strong fit with the program's research interests.

Here are Ivy Options’ tips to navigating the graduate application process:

  • Research Programs: Take time to thoroughly explore different programs, considering factors such as faculty expertise, research opportunities, and overall fit with your career goals.

  • Prepare for Standardized Testing: If required, prepare diligently for standardized tests such as the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and others. Ideally, students should plan to take them in the spring or summer of the year before they intend to apply, allowing for possible retakes. For international students, proficiency tests like the TOEFL or IELTS are equally important. However, remember that many graduate programs are test optional, so take that into consideration and only submit testing if you feel it will help your application.

  • Craft a Compelling Personal Statement: Unlike the undergraduate application process where personal stories play a pivotal role, graduate essays demand a focused narrative that details academic achievements, research experiences, and professional aspirations. Allow ample time for revisions and refinement.

  • Secure Strong Letters of Recommendation: Choose recommenders who know you well and can speak to your academic and professional abilities, and potential for success in graduate studies. If requesting recommendations from professors or other academics, ask at the beginning of fall semester when they are less busy.

  • Prepare for a Decentralized Application Process: For graduate school, there are no centralized application portals. Students apply directly to the specific institution or program of interest. The application process, requirements, and deadlines can vary significantly among schools, so prospective students should be careful and thorough, and reach out to the admissions office of each program for any clarification.
