In today’s digital world, virtual meetings have become a regular—and often essential—part of the application process. Whether you're preparing for a college interview, meeting with a research mentor, attending a university webinar, or even discussing your future with a counselor or teacher, professionalism and preparation are key. Here’s a checklist of practical tips to help you shine in any online setting.

Choose the Right Environment

Make sure you're in a quiet, distraction-free room with a strong internet connection. Background noise or technical glitches can derail even the most confident student. A clean, neutral background is ideal. Make sure that you are alone so that you radiate independence and self-motivation; you definitely don’t want family members or friends chatting behind you. Join the call promptly, do not be late! Silence your mobile phone; you don’t want it to start ringing while you are in an online meeting. Don’t reschedule your meeting either, unless you have a serious emergency.

Appearances Matter

Look polished and put together. A smart shirt or top is perfect. You want to show you’re taking the meeting seriously. Make sure you are well groomed–extremes in appearance can lead to a bad impression. Ace your posture and body language: sit upright at a desk (not in bed or somewhere like the gym) and look straight into the camera, this will show that you respect the person you are meeting and that the meeting is important to you. And of course, don't chew gum or eat.

Know Your Talking Points

Before the meeting, choose 3-4 key qualities/achievements that you want to highlight, such as being a dedicated athlete, a published writer, a passionate volunteer, or a young entrepreneur. Use these points as anchors for your answers and examples. Preparation is key; students who are prepared sound informed and come across as viable candidates. If you have been assigned a task, make sure to complete it before the meeting. At the end of the call, thank the interviewer, mentor, or counselor for their time and consideration.

Show Genuine Interest

Admissions officers and interviewers are looking for enthusiasm and intent. Be sure to express your authentic interest in the university, program, or opportunity–conveying that this place is at the top of your list. This proves to the person you are meeting that you are keen on the opportunity. Answer questions honestly and look interested at all times. Refrain from fidgeting.

Keep It Conversational

Don’t let your answers drag on—this isn’t a monologue. Keep your tone engaging and interactive, and ask thoughtful questions. A good interview should feel like a conversation. The more engaging you are, the greater the chance of making a personal connection with the person you are meeting with—this will leave a positive lasting impression.

Be Specific

Back up your points with short, specific stories or examples that are personal to you. Highlighting specific aspects of your interests and background will convey that you have been intentional about your profile. Generic responses won’t stand out, but your unique experiences will.

Practice Makes Perfect

For interviews, don’t forget to rehearse. Ask your Ivy Options Advisor to schedule a mock interview, so you can get comfortable speaking about yourself and receive feedback on how to improve. Practice, but don’t recite a prepared speech, keep it natural.

Online interviews and webinars are an opportunity to stand out and connect—so treat them seriously. With preparation, professionalism, and personality, you’ll be well on your way to making a great impression. Please contact info@ivyoptions.com for more guidance.
